New Information Systems- How Organisations Struggle With Implementation And 5 Ways To Overcome The Issues

Hey guys,

When you think of information systems what do you think of?

Information systems can be described as a connected set of components that retrieve, process, store and distribute information. This information can then be used to support decision making in organisations.

Today we are going to explore why companies can often struggle when implementing information systems.

Poor Preparation

Preparation is needed amongst the employees and project teams in an organisation. The attitude of teams and employees within an organisation, can have a direct impact on the success or failure of information systems implementation. Employees who will be involved with the new system should be outlined the changes and benefits of the new systems prior to implementation. This engages and prepares employees for the new changes that are about to occur.

Lack of support from Vendor Providing the new Information System

The vendor of the new Information system needs to provide adequate support to the company who are implanting the new system. The vendor should have a proficient process of communicating with the I.T department of the company. Without this communication line there can be a risk of failure for the new information system. The importance of this communication will provide the expertise and guidance from the vendor to the company to resolve any issues that may occur.

Data Integrity

The importance of data security and GDPR are exceptionally important for a company to remain compliant with the law. Failure to uphold data integrity can have a detrimental impact on the reputation of a company. It is important that employees are competently trained on all aspects of this area.

As stated on the LegalIsland.ie website it crucial that staff understand their responsibilities of data integrity to protect themselves and the organisation. Training in this area will protect the company in the occurrence of a data breach that the appropriate training was provided.

Realistic Expectations

Realistic expectations are important when implementing a new system. For example, a company cannot expect their employees to be experts using the new system straight away. Surprisingly this happens! Employees need to be given the appropriate training on the new system to become proficient at using it. An article by Buttercup gives an insight into the importance of setting realistic expectations of employees. It states how important it is for employee morale, productivity, retention and preventing burnout.

Training Needs

Learning and development has been more prominent than ever before. As stated on the Charted Institute of Personal Development (CIPD) website it is about creating the appropriate environment for individuals to learn and grow in an organisation.

The new information system will require adequate training to be given to employees. For instance, if a company is implementing a new intranet system into their organisation. This would create huge learning needs! This training could be delivered with introduction courses and further upskilling courses for employees. This would also boost employee acceptance of the new system and increase productivity.

These are all examples of issues organisations can face with implementing new systems and ideas to enhance their return on investment!

That’s all for today!

Nathan
